How do we get from atoms to tables, roads, animals, clouds or plants (matter)?
To get from atoms, which we cannot see, to matter which we can see
  • the atoms have to JOIN TOGETHER to make MOLECULES.
  • The molecules also have to join together (lots and lots of them!)
We call this joining together CHEMICAL BONDING.
Can ALL atoms bond with each other? = No!!
How can we work out which atoms bond together and how they bond?
Look at the PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS.
Why?
The Periodic Table tells us:
  • The names of all the elements we have discovered (the known elements)
  • If each element is:
a metal
a non-metal
a noble gas
  • How many protons, neutrons and electrons it has.

ionic,covalent, hydrogen bonds

We can then use this information to work out
which atoms bond together and how they bond
